Oh yes, they happen, and oh yes, they annoy us to no end, and oh yes, they could not come at worst times! Erections occur when you get sexually excited; your penis will start to get bigger, and rise (it's often called "getting hard").
Erections can happen any place, any times, and any where, and most importantly, for any reason. Just because you see something sexual doesn't mean you're going to get an erection, and vice-versa; just because you have an erection doesn't mean you saw or thought of something sexually exciting.
A main problem in puberty are spontaneous erection; they happen for no apparent reason, and they ALWAYS, ALWAYS seem to happen at the worst time. No, it's not your body getting back at you for anything -- it's just puberty running it's course. Remember, you have to take the good with the bad, and since spontaneous erections don't last forever, they aren't even all that bad.
Hiding an erection can prove to be one of the toughest things to do, regardless of how big you are "down there." Some of the best ways to prevent them from showing are to wear tighter underwear, and to stay seated as much as possible. By wearing tighter underwear, you prevent the erection from stretching the underwear out. For example, with boxers, since they are loose, the erection will often push out the fabric. With briefs, since they're tighter fitting, they hold the erection back.
One of the most important things we can tell you about erections is to be careful! Try not to make sudden movements while you have an erection, because that would be not only a terrible injury to deal with, but also tough to explain.
Erections usually start early in puberty and can be some of the first signs that puberty is starting for you. Spontaneous erections usually start as you go further into puberty and your hormones kick into overdrive. You may have a period of a few months where it seems like the erections are constant, but don't worry -- they will go away with time!
Don't be discouraged that your erections are a little annoying and embarrasing, when you get older and have the opportunity to have sex, you'll appreciate them a whole lot. For now, remember the upside to bothersome erections: masturbation!
