Acne

You are not Alone

At some point in one's life, you usually go through a stage of getting Acne. Its unsightly, you feel insecure, we all know the feeling. First off, you need to understand the majority of the people on the planet have suffered from it at one point of their life, at different levels. For a lot of people, it happens mostly in your teen years. For others, it happens in the middle working stage of your lives. Just remember, at all times, many people have it too.

What Causes it?

This is a question no one has really been able to answer properly. Yes, you can go on the Net and read articles with this and that explanation, even ones written by dermatologists. But, if you read enough articles, you will realise many contradict each other. One of the common theories on the form of acne is that its hereditary. Try asking your parents when they were young if they got Acne, there’s a good chance (though its not always so) that they had it too.

Pimples are caused by bacteria! During puberty the hair follicle produces lots of oil (called sebum). This oil (mixed with keratin) traps dirt and bacteria. When the pore is completely closed off a "white head" will form. When the pore is only partially closed, those dreaded "black heads" appear. Some people think that washing youre face a whole bunch will help to clear-up the skin. Noper! Excessive washing actually irritates the skin and prompts the glands to produce even more sebum/keratin! Bad idea. Washing your face with mild soap and water a couple times each day is the first start. Keeping away from over-the-counter beauty products and restrictive head gear (ball caps) is the second step. For mild acne, benzoyl peroxide is your best bet. It's available over-the-counter at most drug stores (just ask the pharmacist). It works best when applied following your nighttime wash, just prior to bed. You should see some results in a week or so.

Another reason is clogged pores, by bacteria, oil and dirt. When the bacteria enters your pores, it meets your skin’s anti-bodies, and the result is that white puss. Another reason is allergies. Certain people are allergic to certain foods, which cause breakouts. This differs from person to person, there is no one Acne causing food. The stress factor has also been blamed on causing Acne in various articles.

Myths

There are a lot of Myths on the cause of Acne. One major myth is that eating oily foods causes acne. This is not true. While excessive oils is not good for the body, it has been disproven that all oils cause it. Unless you are allergic to it, this probably is not the cause. Another common myth, which may sound stupid but many people believe, is masturbation causes it. This is as about ridiculous you can get, so please, don’t even bother thinking of it.

What can I do?

Washing is about the best thing you can do for them. The true cure is grow older and get beyond the age of puberty when the hormones start to settle down. In the meantime you will probably always have to put up with a little bit of this.

Now, I’m not really here to talk about the causes, because as I said earlier, its hard to get a clear picture from anyone. But what I will try to help you with is stopping to cause it. First, let’s start basic, cleaning your face. Its good to wash your face at least three times a day with a good anti-bacterial soap or liquid. However, scrubbing your face hard does more harm than good. Scrubbing irritates pimples and will cause them to become redder and last longer. A gentle rub of your skin and washing it off with warm water does the trick.

If you are looking for a commercial solution, benzoyl peroxide is quite effective for most people. Choosing a brand isn’t easy, many have different marketing tactics. Some brands will highlight they have the highest percentage of it, but from my experience, it makes little difference. Benzoyl peroxide is very strong however, and if you have sensitive or dry skin, it may burn. The more it burns, the less you should use it. Some people can use it three times a day without issue, while others can only use it every other day. You will have to see your tolerance level. Benzoyl peroxide helps dry out pimples and fight bacteria, it can help in most cases for light acne.

My doctor put me on some stuff that is working well. It's a pill that you take twice a day (once in the morning and once at night) and an oitment you applie (at night). . . . . I think it's Tetracyclin [An anti-biotic] or something.

If your Acne is lumpy, you should see a dermatologist. A dermatologist can recommend you prescription drugs to help reduce your Acne. Another important thing, Ladies, watch that makeup! Some makeup contain chemicals which aggravate acne. If you realise a trend, stop using that brand/product.

Finally, don’t squeeze pimples unless it is really necessary. Squeezing will irritate a pimple, cause it to be more obvious. More importantly, it can become infected and leave a permanent scare on your face. The bottom line is there are things you can do to fight acne, but chances are, you won’t be able to eradicate it completely. Be confident in yourself, I know its hard, but your friends should care more about your personality than your appearance. If they don’t, do you really want them as a friend?
